Tray, towels, and expect water.
If any of those solves it, that's a call you didn't need to make.
Inlet hoses are a wear item with a finite life. If yours are visibly aged, kinked, corroded at the fittings, or simply of unknown age, replace them — and turn the taps off behind the machine when you're away for more than a few days.
Water is escaping and you can't stop it, the machine is sparking or smells of burning, or it's tripping the breaker. Unplug it and turn off the taps.
It won't drain and the filter is clear, it's leaking from the back or underneath, or there's a burning rubber smell during a cycle. A drum full of water with a full load of washing in it is its own problem, and we'd rather deal with it before the clothes start to smell.
It's noisy but working, the door is stiff, a programme has stopped working, or it's leaving residue on clothes. Everything still functions — that's a standard appointment.
Don't call at all if the pump filter was blocked, the load was unbalanced, the taps were off, or the transit bolts were still in.
Many machines have a drain-down hose beside the pump filter, and emptying it manually usually releases the door. Have a shallow tray ready — there's more water in there than the tray will hold in one go.
Almost always a maintenance issue rather than a fault, and almost always fixable for free.
Low-temperature washing and excess detergent build a biofilm in the drum, the door seal, and the detergent drawer. It smells, and it transfers to clothes.
Run a hot maintenance wash — the highest temperature cycle, empty, with a proper machine cleaner or an appropriate cleaning agent. Then clean the door seal, including the fold at the bottom where water and debris sit. Then clean the detergent drawer and its housing.
Use less detergent, run a hot cycle periodically rather than exclusively low-temperature ones, and leave the door and drawer ajar between washes so the drum can dry.
If the smell is a sewer-like odour rather than a musty one, look at the drain connection instead — that's a plumbing issue rather than an appliance one.
Washing machines typically run somewhere in the region of eight to twelve years, varying considerably by build quality and use.
This matters more than age. Door interlocks, pumps, valves, hoses, belts, brushes, dampers, and control faults are all repairable at sensible cost.
Drum bearings on a sealed drum assembly are the expensive category — and on a machine past the middle of its life, that repair frequently costs enough that replacement is the better buy.
A repair approaching half the replacement cost deserves serious thought, weighted by age and by whether anything else is likely to follow.
And one note for integrated machines: replacement involves the cabinetry as well as the appliance, so the repair case stays stronger for longer.
